KREMA – ein Festival für Kunst am Krematorium Bern, 11.-13. August 2023
Während drei Tagen werden das alte Krematorium, die umliegenden Urnengänge sowie die beiden Kapellen mit einem vielschichtigen Programm bespielt.
Das Festival findet 2023 zum zweiten Mal statt.
Auf dem Programm des KREMA 2022 standen beispielsweise ein Amuse Bouche der Vergänglichkeit; Sellerieköpfe direkt aus der Kohle, ein als Stand-Up Comedy verpacktes Trauerritual für Queere Ahnen, ein eigens für die Orgel der Kleinen Kapelle komponiertes Orgelwerk sowie die Feuerzeremonie eines Hindupriesters.

Feiern an einem Ort der Trauer? Wie soll das kulturell Lustvolle mit dem Akt des Gedenkens vereinbar sein? Das KREMA-Festival wagt es, Kunst als Interface zwischen die Lebenden und die Toten zu stellen.
Das KREMA-Festival 2023 lädt bis zu 15 künstlerische Positionen ein, welche sich an der Schnittstelle von Leben und Tod zu verorten trauen und den Ort Krematorium kreativ beleuchten. Diese Beiträge können sich in einer Ausstellung, einer Installation, Performance, einem Konzert oder Workshop zeigen oder auch andere, hybridere Formen annehmen.

- Synopsis max. 100 Wörter
- Projektbeschrieb max. 400 Wörter inkl. Zeitlichkeit (ongoing/ falls time-based wie lange, wir begrüssen bei Performances und Konzerten eine mehrmalige Programmierung während des Festivals). Wo zutreffend, Werkgrösse und Angaben zur Installation sowie (falls vorhanden) Wunschort angeben (besuche die virtuelle Tour).
- Artist-Biografie max. 200 Wörter
- Links zu für die Eingabe relevanten Portfolios, Skizzen, Soundaufnahmen, Videos (keine Downloads)
- falls vorhanden Links zu vorherigen Durchführungen/Ausstellungen/Performances des Projekts
Hinweis: Jede Künstler_in ist für Auf- und Abbau der eigenen Werke selber verantwortlich. Bei Ausstellungen muss mitbedacht werden, dass Teile des Krematoriums denkmalgeschützt sind. Das bedeutet, dass keine Löcher in die Wände gebohrt werden dürfen und somit andere Lösungen für die Aufhängung der Werke gefunden werden müssen.
Wir bieten
- pro Beitrag pauschale Gage von 1’000.- CHF
- Reisespesen (nicht in den Spesen inbegriffen ist der Transport von Werken; allfällige Ausgaben diesbezüglich werden auf Anfrage individuell besprochen)
- falls nötig Unterkunft in Bern
- die Möglichkeit, die eigene Arbeit in einen Zusammenhang mit einem Krematorium zu stellen
- die Gelegenheit, sich in einem spannenden Team mit Fragen rund um den Tod, Kunst, Trauer, Feier und Ritualen auseinanderzusetzen

Wird dein Beitrag ausgewählt, vereinbaren wir für Anfang Juni 2023 eine Besprechung zum weiteren Vorgehen, um Details zu Aufbau, Probezeiten etc. zu besprechen. Einsendeschluss für die definitiven Werkbeschriebe und Kurzfassungen Artist-Biografien für die Webseite wird der 30. Juni 2023 sein.
Open-Call for artistic positions
KREMA – a festival for art at the crematorium Bern, August 11-13, 2023.
During three days the old crematorium, the surrounding urn corridors as well as the two chapels will be activated with a multi-layered program.
The festival will be held for the second time in 2023.
The program of KREMA 2022 included, for example, an amuse bouche of transience; celery heads charred in coal, a mourning ritual for queer ancestors packaged as stand-up comedy, an organ work composed especially for the organ of the Small Chapel, and a Hindu priest’s fire ceremony.

Celebrating in a place of mourning? How can the culturally pleasurable be compatible with the act of commemoration? The KREMA-Festival dares to place art as an interface between the living and the dead.
The KREMA-Festival 2023 invites up to 15 artistic positions that dare to locate themselves at an interface between life and death and simultaneously illuminate the site of the crematorium in a creative way. These contributions may be in the form of exhibitions, installations, performances, concerts, workshops, or other more hybrid forms.

In a single PDF, titled with your initials and project title please submit to kremafestival(at)gmail.com.
– synopsis max. 100 words
– project description max. 400 words including temporality (ongoing/ if time-based how long, for performances and concerts we welcome multiple programming during the festival). Where applicable, indicate size of work and details of installation and desired location (visit the virtual tour), if you have one.
– artist biography max. 200 words
– links to portfolios, sketches, sound recordings, videos relevant to the submission (no downloads)
– if available: links to previous performances/exhibitions/performances of the project (no downloads)
Note: Each artist is responsible for the installation and dismantling of their own work. For exhibitions it must be taken into account that parts of the crematorium are protected monuments. This means that no holes may be drilled in the walls and therefore other solutions must be found for hanging works.

– artist fee of 1’000.- CHF
– Travel expenses (not included in the expenses is the transport of works; any expenses in this regard need to be discussed upon request)
– if necessary, accommodation in Bern
– the opportunity to place your work into relation with a crematorium
– the opportunity to work in an exciting team on issues related to death, art, mourning, celebration and rituals

Decision by the end of May 2023
If your entry is selected, we will arrange a meeting for the beginning of June 2023 to discuss details on installation, rehearsal times, etc. The deadline for the final work descriptions and artist biographies for the website will be June 30, 2023.
